As the Leeds Marathon approaches, runners are getting ready for the ultimate endurance challenge. With all the training and excitement building up to race day, there's one common mistake that a lot of marathon runners make without even realising it, and it could really affect how well they do and how much they enjoy the whole experience.

"Many runners are failing to protect themselves from the sun," says Keeley Sutcliffe from Solarsport. "Inadequate sun protection can lead to problems like sunburn, dehydration, and feeling really hot and tired during the race, affecting race performance and post-race recovery."

Wear Appropriate Clothing

Opt for lightweight, breathable clothing that covers as much skin as possible. Consider wearing a cap or visor to shield your face and eyes from direct sunlight.

Apply Sunscreen Generously

Choose a fast-absorbing, non-greasy sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher and apply it liberally to all exposed skin at least 15 minutes before the race begins. Don't forget to reapply every two hours or more frequently if sweating excessively. Handy travel-size bottles of sunscreen are recommended as they can fit in runners’ pockets or waist bags so they can be re-applied when needed.

Stay Hydrated

Proper hydration is essential for marathon runners, especially in warm weather. Drink plenty of water before, during, and after the race to replenish fluids lost through sweat.

Protect Your Eyes

Wear sunglasses with UV protection to shield your eyes from harmful UV rays and reduce the risk of eye damage during the race.

Listen to Your Body

Pay attention to signs of heat exhaustion or sunburn during the race. Take advantage of shaded areas along the race route to give your skin a break from direct sunlight. If you start feeling dizzy, nauseous, or develop a
