5 Things to Take with you on a Trail Run
Whether I'm nipping out for a few miles on my local trails or heading out for a long day in the hills; I always make sure I pack these 5 things in my running pack.
1. Spare layers
The great British weather is known to be unpredictable, and I have learnt the hard way that layers are always needed. Even when the forecast is set to be gloriously sunny, I pack some light layers to ensure I can keep warm if I have to stop in an emergency. The Inov8 Stormshell, Windshell and Trail Pants are super lightweight options that will take up very little space and can even be stuffed into a bumbag.
2. Snacks
I can't resist a sweet treat and if I'm heading out for more than an hour, I make sure that I have a couple of snacks in my bag in case I get peckish. Long mountain days call for more thought on fuelling, with most runners aiming for between 60-90 grams of carbs per hour. My favourite running snacks include Chia Charge mini flapjacks and chews as well as Torq gels.
3. Solarsport SPF spray
Don't forget that SPF is needed regardless of whether the sun is shining. I apply my Solarsport moisturiser before I leave the house and regularly reapply my Solarsport spray. Its light a small enough to pop into my bag. Being sun smart needn't be a chore with these two products!
4. Phone & Safety Items
I always take my phone with me, you never know what can happen! Make sure you have the What Three Words app downloaded and you can also pop maps on there as a backup, I use Gaia. This isn't an alternative to taking a map and compass if you're heading into the hills. It's also useful to always have a bivvy bag and mini first aid kit.
5. A friend
If my dog can't come, I'm not that bothered about going anyway. Runs are so much more fun with your four-legged friend. If you don't have a dog, two legged friends will also add to the fun.
